Qualification Information

This qualification reflects the role of barbers who use a range of well-developed sales, consultation and technical skills and knowledge to provide a broad range of barbering services to clients.  They use discretion and judgement to provide client services and take responsibility for the outcomes of their own work.

This qualification provides a pathway to work as a barber in any industry environment, usually a barber shop or salon.

Entry Requirements

You must have successfully completed SHB30416 Certificate III in Hairdressing.  Potential learners do not need to be currently employed to enrol in this course.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN)

In accordance with the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF), the learner at the commencement of the training is expected to be at least level 3 for Learning, Reading, and Oral Communication; and level 2 for Writing and Numeracy.  There may be a requirement to complete a Pre Training Review to confirm your LLN level prior to commencing the course.

Credit Transfer (CT)

CT is the recognition of the successful completion of units of competency towards this qualification.  Learners who have already completed the SHB30416 Certificate III in Hairdressing will be credited with twenty (20) units of competency.  Participants wishing to apply for CT must be able to produce a copy of their previous qualification.  Credit can also be awarded for the completion of the SHB20216 Certificate II in Salon Assistant.  For further details, please enquire with our educators upon enrolment.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is the recognition of knowledge and skills gained through life, work or other experiences that satisfies the competency requirements for one or more units.  Learners wishing to apply for RPL are to make application to do so at the time of enrolment.

Duration and Study Options

The nominal duration for this course is 170 hours after taking into account CT for your previous hairdressing qualification.  Further time may be saved through the RPL process based on your previous experience.  This will be considered on a case by case basis and discussed with you at the time of enrolment.

Full time learners will be required to attend for 5 days a week at 6.5 hours per day for 6 weeks.

Part time learners will be required to attend for a minimum of 2 days a week at 6.5 hours per day for 14 weeks.

In addition to this study time, learners must complete a total of 30 hours of on-the-job learning.
